Cocktail Anthology consists of eponymous drinks named after expatriates of the time like American anthropologist, Margaret Mead who chose the highland village of Bayung Gede for her work. Mead documented 200 photographs from 1936 to 1939 where she vividly captured the everyday lives of the men, women, and children of her adopted village. As an author and academic, Mead was in her element calling Bali life “a rhythmic, patterned unreality of pleasant, significant movement, centered in one’s own body to which all emotions long ago withdrew.”
Sanur started out of course as a ‘60s tourist destination with the Bali Beach Hotel (now called The Grand Inna Bali Beach). Japanese war reparation money built the landmark property and imported industrial sand to shore up the beaches. The bunkers of the Bali Beach Golf Course also grew this way; a once tricky nine-holer with caddies schooled by the minding of ageing expatriates, that is now a mere memory.
There’s a lot to be said for a beach day with Bintangs and nasi goreng. However, if you want something a little cooler, head to one of the island’s famous beach clubs and indulge in fruit-filled cocktails, soundtracks that float on the breeze and swimming pools straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine. Bali has the lot, from laid-back chill out beach clubs to new ones with refreshing concepts to add to old favourites that have both survived and thrived.
